The Heart of Yoga - An Introduction to Yoga Philosophy

  • Yoga Seeds Shala 1384 Ang Mo Kio Avenue 1 Singapore, 569932 Singapore (map)

If you've ever wondered what yoga is truly about beyond the physical practice, this two-day workshop led by our founder Wendy Chan offers the perfect starting point.

Together, we'll explore the philosophical foundations of yoga through two of its most influential texts—the Bhagavad Gita and Patanjali's Yoga Sutras—and discover how their teachings can help us navigate stress, uncertainty, relationships and everyday life with greater clarity and purpose.

Each day combines Hatha Yoga, Pranayama, Meditation, Storytelling, Philosophy and group discussion, allowing you to experience these teachings both on and off the mat.

Over two days, you'll explore:

  • The origins and evolution of yoga

  • The story of Arjuna's dilemma and its relevance to our own inner struggles

  • The key concepts of karma (action) and dharma (purpose)

  • An introduction to Patanjali and the purpose of the Yoga Sutras

  • The meaning of "Yogaś citta-vṛtti-nirodhaḥ"—calming the fluctuations of the mind

  • The Eight Limbs of Yoga as a practical guide for living, not just practising yoga

By the end of the workshop, you'll leave with:

  • A clear understanding of yoga's philosophical foundations

  • A deeper appreciation of the Bhagavad Gita and Yoga Sutras

  • Practical tools to cultivate a calmer mind and make wiser decisions

  • A framework for integrating yoga into daily life beyond asana

  • A strong foundation for further study or teacher training

Whether you're a yoga practitioner, teacher, or simply curious about the deeper purpose of yoga, this workshop will help you connect the ancient wisdom of yoga with the realities of modern living.

Suitable for all levels. No prior knowledge of yoga philosophy is required

About Wendy Chan

Wendy's background and interest in eastern and western philosophy led her to explore and study the workings of the universe's mind, body and subtle energies. This exploration led her to realise her true calling - to teach and share yoga and meditation. With diverse training in yoga and meditation in different traditions, Wendy seeks a balanced and complete view of one's practice and spiritual development.

Founder and lead trainer of Yoga Seeds, Wendy leads the Yoga Seeds Shala's teaching team and the Yoga Seeds Teacher Training Program faculty. She curates and designs yoga curriculum, programs and activities for Yoga Seeds classes, retreats, training and workshops in locations all over Asia to spread the seeds of yoga wherever she can. Her curiosity and love for travelling and nature has led to her continued discovery of different genres of yoga and meditation.

As an ambassador for Yoga Gives Back, she organises regular fundraisers and classes for charity. She is deeply committed to giving back to the community through our Karma Yoga Projects.

Wendy's style of yoga is a unique blend of Classical, Vinyasa and Yin Yoga, emphasising the breath in both movement and stillness. She teaches anywhere she can unroll her mat, and her love for nature has brought her much inspiration - be it from her diving adventures or mountain hikes.
